Garden Status

I spent some time reading in my garden this evening, after Jonathan went to bed. It was rather pleasant and a break from the excruciating high temperatures we’ve been setting recently here in Austin (have already seen 100 degrees more than once). We have loads of house finches around, at least 8, as well as cardinals and their 3 babies. Also frequenting our feeders is a pair of white-winged doves, and we have a new nest (four eggs and a very testy mummy) of Carolina wrens in the Wandering Jew hanging basket.

My vegetable garden is proving to be quite a learning experience. The cherry tomato plant is amazing—it’s covered up all the spinach as well as the carrots and half the leeks. And the tomatoes—my god, they are wonderful. Bursting with flavor, just like Mom’s. I actually ate one all by itself the other day, not even in a salad.

The squash had loads of blossoms and will probably produce a bunch of fruit when the time comes. Something is eating the strawberries; not sure what.

My final note is this: nothing has died yet, although my snapdragons are looking a little sad. This must set a record for me and my Darwin’s garden!

Congratulations on your garden - learning experience or not. We're of course behind you, but have had great lettuce, spinach, green onions and I cut 2 heads of broccoli yesterday. Peas should be ready by end of week. However, the cabbage is being eaten by some bug and the radishes were lousy.

I was a little confused when first reading about the new nest with its four eggs and "tasty" mummy...I read it correctly on the 2nd reading :-)

Congrats on the garden. It all looks wonderful!

I always thought you were a non-vegetarian. I guess growing your own can really make a difference when it comes to eating veggies. I'm happy to read that yours is coming along nicely. By the way...keep those 100 degree days in your vicinity, will you?

Can I have a tomato? I am going to be in Austin this weekend...it would be a perfect time to get one from you. :-)

Mom--sorry to hear about the cabbage and radishes. We had a truly awesome thunderstorm about 2 o'clock this morning, and I think 2 of my 3 squash plants are now history, as well as possibly all my leeks.

Theresa--I am essentially a non-vegetarian, although I do eat pretty good salads. Just because I grow squash doesn't mean I'm going to eat it myself!

Auntie Rita--but of course you may have a tomato, if I have any ripe this weekend. They seem to ripen one about every four days or so, but there are TONS on there. It survived the thunderstorm just fine. Maybe you could come over and have a look at my garden while you're here this weekend? See you at dinner on Saturday evening.
